It was supposed to be a simple birthday weekend in Southern California. But when sunrise arrives two hours early in the form of a haunting light from an unknown source, a group of friends watch in terror as people across the city are drawn outside and swept into massive alien ships that have blotted out the Los Angeles skyline!

Skyline is a new release that really doesn’t perform well.  Created by the Strause Brothers, (Colin & Greg) who do very well in their forte of special effects but not so good on anything else. The special effects are pretty cool but the actors and the writing just don’t seem to perform well enough for us to care about them, or their story for that matter.

The plot revolves around a group of twenty something’s who party all night and wake up to fireballs falling all over Los Angeles from alien mother ships.  From there we find that people are drawn to the light and soon disappear.  They end up being transported (vacuumed?) into the mother ships and bye-bye to them.

Even though the military doesn’t seem to have much effect on the aliens, they seem to be vulnerable to one in the group of would be heroes that survived being drawn into the light. I It was baffling to see these charaters battling it out with axes and handguns…why would anyone think this makes sense?

It’s not even close to Independence Day, so why bother trying?  That story has been told many times before and this telling is not very well done.  And the ending, it will leave you speechless and not in a happy way.  Special effects can never overcome poor story telling.  This one is one you should pass on. However, it maybe good for a Saturday afternoon nap once and if it every ends up on basic cable.
